As young kids in the 1970's so many of us were very aware of Evel Knievel. He was cool, daring and in today’s terms "awesome". When I was in elementary school I had an Evel Knievel lunch pail as did several other students at my school. One year, for my birthday, I was given and Evel Knievel motorcycle that came with a plastic "pull cord", you just put the cord in, yank it out and let the toy go and it was fantastic.
As I grew up I took an interest in rock music. Eventually finding myself in a hard rock/metal band named SPATER. Being an avid fan of the legendary Australian band AC/DC, the guys in my band will occasionally tease me about it because I have the entire catalog. One day, back in 2000, after razzing me on it, we decided to write a song in the style of AC/DC.
Our bass player/singer decided to write lyrics about one of his childhood heroes, Evel Knievel. In 2004, we recorded it and have played it out many times over the years. The song is aptly named “EVEL KNIEVEL“.
When we got the news of Evel’s passing, we were saddened. You just don’t realize how much someone has effected you until they are gone. Though we never knew Evel personally or even saw him in person, we will miss him. I can tell you for sure that growing up, there were many wheelies and ramp jumping that were directly inspired by the image of Evel.
In celebration of his life and the memories we have of him, we have decided to put the song up for free download on our website (www.spaterrock.com) as a tribute to the man, the legendary Evel Knievel. This is done with all due respect and sincerely hope that no one is offended in any way by this.
I just wanted to share this with you. May he rest in peace.
Dave Henninger (SPATER)
