In 1975, I was 5 years old and my Dad took my brother and I to see Evel jump a bunch of busses in an amusment park parking lot in my home town of Cincinnati Ohio. I don't remember having ever heard of Evel before that day,but I very excited to see someone jump a motorcycle. At the time my dad rode a Sportster and would wheely it up and down the street for the amusment of my brother and I as well as other kids on the block but the thought of jumping was the coolest thing ever. We woke early that morning and found a good spot near the front row about 10 or 15 yards from the landing ramp. After what to me seemed forever Evel came powering out from beyond my view front wheel pointing at the sky standing on the seat!!! Dad never stood on the seat doing a wheely! Crazy flag looking leathers,no helmet,smiling and taking a hand off the bars to wave at the crowd,this is the coolest guy ever I thought and we still have the jump to see. After the preshow Evel came out and made a little speech about staying away from drugs(I didn't know what drugs were at the time) and living life..........All I could think of though was him flying over those busses. Finaly show time,after a couple of dry runs to the top of the ramp my Dad looked over at me and said don't look away this is it! The first thing I heard was the roar of the bike rolling at full throttle and then I saw him running up the ramp with nothing but determination to make this jump! Off he went,from my view he looked a thousand feet in the air and went a mile or more then landed like an angel. I was hooked for life. That night I told my folks that I had to have a minibike for my birthday,I got one and started jumping and racing as a little kid,moved on to roadracing in my early 20's after getting to old for mx. Had a nice semi-pro career with Formula USA, WERA endurance,Buell lightning series,none of witch would of happened without Evel! P.S. I have a big Evel tattoo on my leg just under a scar from a motorcycle misshap that I will see everyday for the rest of my life......
